Infection is transmitted by snails living in fresh water such as lakes, rivers, streams and ponds in Africa, and some countries in Southeast Asia, South America, and the Caribbean.

Schistosomiasis risk is present in the described areas only:

S. mekongi is present in Stung Treng District (Stung Treng Province) and Kratié Province in the towns and villages along the Mekong River.

Note: Cambodia has implemented a plan to control and eliminate Schistosomiasis in affected regions resulting in reduced prevalence of the disease. However, the lack of improved sanitation and living conditions increase the risk of re-infection.

The main intermediate host snail is: Neotricula aperta
