Risk is endemic throughout rural and suburban areas below 3600 m / 11,811 ft, with very high human infection rates reported from the departments of Cochabamba (including the city of Cochabamba), Sucre, Tarija, and Santa Cruz.

Main vectors: Triatoma infestans, Triatoma sordida. The insect is locally known as 'vinchuca'.
